Winter tends to be the time of year when our fitness resolutions go out of the window. The cold nights and bulky clothing tends to decrease our motivation, while the thought of a summer body and days at the beach seem a long way off into the distant future. Rather than losing all your dedication completely, try to keep your workout routines going and you will be rewarded by the head start you will have on everyone else when they start theirs back up again.
Here are a few ways to avoid grinding to a halt over the winter months.
Embrace the Cold
If you easy access to winter activities like skiing, snowboarding or ice skating, make the most of these. Not only are they all great fun, they can also be a great workout for all your muscles. If not, don’t let your regular running routine suffer because of the cold. Though it may be difficult at first, make sure you dress appropriately and you will soon warm up after a few minutes. Arriving back into the warmth after you have finished will feel all the better too!
Invest in New Equipment
There is nothing more likely to keep you motivated than some new equipment. If you have invested a lot of money in some new running shoes, you won’t want to see them just sitting there doing nothing for months on end! Also, think about buying some specific wintry clothing like gloves or thermal leggings that have to be used around this time of year. If you are taking up a new sport like squash or badminton, why not treat yourself to a new racket?
Take Things Steady
The most important thing is that you keep going throughout the winter months. It’s more than likely your pace will slow down somewhat as you probably won’t have the same amount of time and energy, but don’t let this bring you down too much. If you stop working out completely, all the hard work you have put in over the warmer months will be lost completely and you will have to start again from scratch. Take a look at these ways to beat seasonal weight gain.
Find A Workout Buddy
There’s nothing like working out with a friend for keeping your motivation going through the winter. Alternatively, now may be the time to hire a personal trainer. If you have someone you are letting down by not showing up, you are more likely to keep going. Try to find someone who is even more motivated than yourself, and will drag you out of the house kicking and screaming if they have to!
Try Something New
Shake up your workout routine by trying something that you have never done before. Take up a new sport and it is likely you will find yourself throwing yourself into practice sessions with more enthusiasm. Alternatively, enroll in a new training class at the gym that will take you out of your comfort zone. Anything that focuses your mind on something new and different can only be a positive thing.

I am really tired of the very bitter cold winter that we have had where I live and the snow is piled up over 4 feet in my backyard from all the snow over the winter months. I am so ready for Spring. But, these are all good tips. Having a workout buddy really helps keep things from being boring.

For me, the biggest issue with Winter (besides the nasty weather, lol) is how I feel. Having the heat on seems to loosen all the dust in the vents & blow it out, so my allergies go nuts. So, allergies, sinus infections & the inevitable cold every year all make me so exhausted that i give up on any exercise. Honestly, I’m sitting here with a bad head cold…looking for Springtime just over the horizon!
