I’m getting ready for our annual Easter egg decorating activity with my kiddos and will be trying some new ideas this year. If you are looking for something different to do, other than the usual egg dying kits, I have rounded up a few resources to get you started.
Onion dyed eggs by Craftster
This is one of my favorite ideas for decorating those boring white eggs, but I do believe its more for adults than young children. The eggs are blown out and dyed using onion skins. The result is a pretty brown egg with an impression of a leaf, flower, or what ever you choose. VERY cool natural technique for decorating.
Natural Dyes by The Go Green Blog
The kids can jump in on this one and it would be a great learning lesson in the process of having fun. Gather some beets for pink, red onion skins for red, spinach for green, red cabbage for blue, and carrot tops for yellow, and then boil the eggs with water, vinegar, and one of the natural dyes. SUPER eco-friendly non-toxic approach to beautiful colored eggs. Check out the blog for the suggested list of ingredients and instructions.
Groovy Easter Eggs by MIY Creations
Maddylane uses wax crayon shavings to make colorful and unique looking tie-dye eggs. She also gives step by step instructions on how to create marbleized looking eggs with tissue paper. This project is suitable for children and costs pennies per egg. If you haven’t checked out her website – you are missing out. Its awesome!
Stenciled Chick Easter Eggs by Martha Stewart
NO holiday would be complete without Martha Stewart’s wonderful crafty take on things. I admit, I think Martha is fantastic and just love her. This project is rather extensive in my opinion and for adults. There is a video showing how to make the Stenciled Chick Easter Eggs (shown above) here.
Herd of Eggimals by FamilyFun
These little adorable “Eggimals” are made using plastic Easter eggs, felt, and tiny pom-poms. The kids will LOVE making these keepable cuties and displaying them on their shelves. FamilyFun is my first main source for kids crafting ideas and recipes. Take a good look around for other egg decorating projects.
