we can’t wait for easter. we have three easter egg hunts lined up and lots of goodies for the easter baskets
my favorite easter treat is a cadbury egg– they are so rich i can only stomach one but i look forward to it every year
I love the movie Bambi, but to this day I still feel sad when I think about Bambi’s Mom. Such a sad way to start his little life, Guess it’s because I lost my Mom too soon also. But I want my kids and grandkids to see the movie it’s so adorable.
ncjeepster@aol.com
my three year old will be dying his own eggs for the first time this year–i’m sure it will be messy
we called the easter bunny on the phone yesterday, my mom was kind enough to disguise her voice and go along with the silliness
My friends once did a fun Easter activity once their kids hit about twelve years old. They had a reverse Easter Egg hunt. That means the kids hid the eggs and the parents had to find them. The parents were told how many eggs were hid and for however many they didn’t find, they owed the kids a dollar a piece. Those kids hid them pretty good the parents said. They owed them some money when they finally gave up looking. Then the tweens had to go around and show the parents where the ones where that they hadn’t found. They called it a reverse Easter Egg hunt.
I love thumper and flower
Although we love all the fun egg hunting and egg decorating activities, this year I will be taking my kids to the Stations of the Cross at Church so they can begin to understand the true meaning of Easter

Mini Poem:
The girl Easter bunny wanted a piece of celery to eat,
but the boy Easter bunny said not until you wash your hands and feet.
The girl Easter bunny said they look clean and smell sweet,
but the bluebirds in the sky said wash, wash, wash, tweet, tweet, tweet.
The boy Easter bunny said, germs you can not see,
and you don’t know what you just stepped in hopping under that tree.
The worm popped his head up under the ground,
and said little Easter bunny girl I wish you could see some of the things that I’ve found.
Okay, Okay, already the Easter bunny girl said,
I’ll wash right now, before any more of your words start hopping about in my head.
So while she went and washed the germs away,
her brother and mother made her a good vegetable breakfast to start off her Easter day in a healthy way.

We have lots of different breads for Easter.
The most important part of Easter is Our Lord Rising from the dead proving that He is the Son of God
Going to church on Easter Sunday is our most important activity
such a cute basket i love bambie
On the day before Easter, we color approximately 5 dozen eggs.
i follow happy hippy mom on facebook
All of our colored Easter eggs will be eaten within 4 days.
All those Easter eggs will be eaten by my hubby, six kids, myself, and whoever comes to visit.
If our Easter eggs are not eaten within that 4 day period, we will shell them and give them to our coyote friends that come to sleep at our house every morning.
I will have to get a potted Easter Lily
One of the breads that we will make for Easter will be cinnamon rolls
These Easter cinnamon rolls are made from a secret recipe using ricotta cheese and orange juice
Another bread we make will be cream cheese filled bread
We also make Raspberry Tea cake for Easter.

We get ready for Easter by attending services during Holy Week
We just don’t crack our eggs at Easter, we have Easter egg fights to see whose egg will survive the longest without cracking
We have found out recently that this Egg cracking war tradition came from my husband’s grandfather, a Greek.

Easter Poetry
~~
Easter comes but once a year
Easter comes but once a year
But when it does, we all know its here
Children filling themselves with chocolate
Dad’s down the pub for a pint of beer!
We go to the church for the wine and bread
Dad’s half asleep, and jerking his head
Baby sister is here too, munching away
On the free Easter egg that the Priest gave us today
But remember we must, that the Lord died for us
And ascended into heaven to give us fresh lives
For each and every one of us.

Easter Bunny Hugs And Kisses
That cute little bunny has hopped all day,
delivering baskets for the holiday.
His paws are so tired and his nose how it itches,
He left you something special to fulfill all your wishes-
Lots of cute little Easter bunny hugs and kisses.

His Love
God sent His Son to take the punishment
For all the thoughtless, sinful things we do;
Jesus gave his life because He loves us;
His love is boundless, sweet, forever true.
On Easter morn He showed He is our Savior;
His resurrection proves He is our Lord.
That is why we tell you, “Happy Easter!”
He secured our heavenly reward!

Easter Poetry
Celebrate Our Savior
On Easter morn, we celebrate our Savior;
Whatever people seek in Him, they find.
In history, there has never been another
So holy, sacrificial, good and kind.
His resurrection makes us all immortal;
In heaven, we’ll be together with our King.
Eternally we’ll share in all His blessings;
Happy Easter! Jesus Christ is everything!

I have taught my 4 year old granddaughter the true meaning of Easter, she attends church with my husband and I every Sunday, she knows who Jesus is and that Jesus died on Good Friday and rose again on Easter Sunday, since she is only 4 years old, she asked a lot of questions but I truly think she understands. She is very very sweet.

My granddaughter still believes in the Easter bunny and somehow, we didn’t confuse her at all with the true meaning of Easter and the bunny rabbit Easter. We have an Easter egg and basket and gift hunt every Saturday before Easter. Carley loves it and looks forward to it every year. Funny, she’s only 4 and still remembers (as she says, when she was a baby) the hunt we had when she was only 2.

My husband and I will attend church on Good Friday (we attend church every Friday for the Stations of the Cross). On Good Friday, it’s a two hour mass followed by a black out in the church where all the lights go out, we will sit in the dark for only a few minutes and everyone leaves in silent. It’s a very touching moment and I always cry.

what a wonderful easter basket for my grandbaby. haven’t seen in her in 9 months. i miss her so much
We do easter egg hunts!
We make cute Bunny cakes!!
we make cute lil baskets for our friends
WE have Egg Dyeing sessions!
Easter egg pinatas!
Fill several small plastic eggs with jelly beans, nuts, or small candies and hang them just above the heads of the kids. A ribbon placed in the egg as it is closed works well. Place a sheet below the eggs to catch the loot. Blindfold kids one at a time and give them a short stick to swing at the collection of eggs. Each child keeps candy that falls on their swing.
Egg and Spoon Races! 🙂
easter egg curling!
The object of this game is to get as close to the egg at the center of a circle without touching it. Draw concentric circles in chalk around an egg and have kids roll eggs from the largest outside circle. You are out of the game if you touch the center egg or break your own egg.
Blown Egg Races!!!
This race uses eggs with their insides blown out! Place these lightweight eggs on a flat surface like a table or plywood. Give each contestant a straw. Contestants must race their egg to a finish line at the other end of the table using nothing but air through the straw. More difficult than it sounds!
Easter Basket Swings!
Tie a rope to the handle of a basket and hang the basket from a low tree limb. Fill plastic eggs with bird seed or sand and tape them closed. Party guests can toss the weighted eggs into the basket.
I also like: Humpty’s Easter Challenge
It is a game that works well for younger kids who are learning their colors. Separate the halves of a dozen plastic eggs of different colors and place these in a bowl. Place an empty egg carton nearby for completed eggs. Give each child a chance to race against the clock and put the eggs back together again.
For extra challenge, place the egg carton a short distance away and have kids deliver each egg as it is completed and then run back to work on the next broken egg.
Flying Eggs!!!
This works best if all the pairs are in a row. Contestants toss a dyed or raw egg to their partner. With a completed toss each person takes a step away from their partner to increase the distance. The toss is repeated. Dropping your egg or breaking it will disqualify the pair
An Easter egg hunt can become a scavenger hunt if you fill plastic eggs with clues that lead hunters from one place to another. On small slips of paper write clues similar to “Find the dog’s home and search for an egg, not his bone.”
The rabbit is a favorite feature of Easter… and adding a bit of hopping can make anything an Easter game!
Supplies and Set-Up: To play the Easter Egg Hop, cut large eggs from cardboard (you’ll want to make three for every two kids) and have the kids color them with crayons or paints beforehand.
How to Play: Children pair up and are given three eggs for each pair in the race. Each pair starts by standing on one egg per person and holding their third egg. The free egg is then placed on the ground ahead so one partner can hop onto it. The newly freed egg on the ground is moved out in front of the partners so one of them can hop forward toward the finish line. Partners continue leapfrogging like this until one pair crosses the finish with all their eggs.
Making it a Race: The bunny hop can be made into a race very easily.
Create a starting line and finish line with chalk or a rope in the grass. The kids should show their best bunny hop as they move race toward the finish. Too easy for your kids? Try using a duck’s waddle! Kids squat down on the starting line and grab their right ankle with their right hand and left ankle with their left hand. Then they waddle like a duck to finish the race.
Create a Bingo card with pictures for younger kids or words for older ones. The card should include signs of spring like growing grass or flowers as well as Easter icons like eggs, rabbits, or baskets. Give each child a marker and a Bunny Bingo page for a car trip or during a pause in other activities. The first child to get all of the items wins a prize
Save your Easter cookie decorating for your party! Cut sugar cookie dough into egg shapes and bake them up before your party. Provide icing, colored sugars and small candies to encourage children to make Easter shaped treats. Each child should have a paper plate to work on. Examples of rabbit faces or striped eggs will help your artists get the idea.
My favorite character is Thumper.
My boys are allergic to eggs so we paint and put stickers on wooden eggs for Easter!

The color used in painting Easter eggs differ in different nations. Orthodox Grecians paint their eggs red to symbolize the blood of Christ, some Germans and Austrians paint their eggs green adn use them on Holy Thursday. Slavic peoples docorate their eggs in gold and silver patterns.
Donna
Easter is my favorite holiday. I am Greek Orthodox Christian and there are so many customs like dying red eggs, and roasting lamb on the spit!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
I would love to win this for my kids! They haven’t seen Bambi yet. They would love it!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
Ninety million chocolate Easter bunnies and 16 billion jelly beans are produced each year before the commencement of the Easter festivities. As a holiday, Easter comes only second to Halloween in terms of the annual sale confectionary items.
Donna
One of my favorite things about Easter is getting ready to make Greek Easter cookies! Koulourakia. They are delicious!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
Only 11 more days until Easter!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest Easter egg ever made was just over 25 feet hight and weighed 8,968 lbs.
Donna
I just won the Jesus Storybook Bible for my kids for Easter! I can’t wait to start reading it to them!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
76% of people eat the ears on chocolate bunnies first.
Donna
Will be taking the kids to an Easter Egg hunt at our church this Sunday! It will be my daughter’s first! I am so excited.
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
Easter is a “moveable feast” as it does not fall on a fixed date in the Gregorian or Julian calendars. The full moon determines the date of Easter.
Donna
I love buying Easter books instead of a lot, a lot of candy on Easter. Saves my kids teeth! Although they do love their chocolate!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
Every year we eat Greek Easter bread that is called Tsoureki, and it is absolutely delicious. This is another thing that I look forward to.
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
Church service at our church for Easter is absolutely amazing! Our Easter falls on the same day this year!
I really have tried to start reading my kids stories about Easter, and taking them to church. They are young still, but I don’t want them to think the meaning of Easter, is about the Easter bunny, although I let them enjoy that part too.
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
Easter comes but once a year
Easter comes but once a yearBut when it does, we all know its here
Children filling themselves with chocolate
Dad’s down the pub for a pint of beer!
We go to the church for the wine and bread
Dad’s half asleep, and jerking his head
Baby sister is here too, munching away
On the fee Easter egg that the Priest gave us today.
But remember we must, that the Lord died for us
And ascended into heaven to give us fresh lives
For each and every one of us.
Donna
I follow everyone on google and yahoo, GOD BLESS YA’LL
Easter Bunny Hugs and Kisses
That cute little bunny has hopped all day.,
delivering baskets for the holiday.
His paws are so tired and his nose how it itches,
He left ou something special to fulfill all your wishes.
Lots of cute little Easter bunny hugs and kisses.
Donna
Some Easter fun facts that I found out are that the Egg Roll on the White house lawn has been a tradition since 1878!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
Easter Bunny Poop
The Easter Bunny came last night
And left this little scoop.
Because you weren’t too good this year,
You’re getting Bunny Poop!
Donna
Another fun facts that made me laugh, and is also true for me is that 86 percent would prefer having chocolate bunnies instead of a live rabbit!. You can say that again!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
We are having Easter dinner at my mom & dad’s house, like we do every year! My mom’s cooking is amazing!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
I think that I am going to be making Tiramisu cupcakes for Easter this year!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
I can’t wait for the Easter Egg hunt for my kids! I think it will be especially fun for my daughter, because it is her first time, and a little bit easier for my son this year as he is older,!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
This year we bought Pixar Cars Easter Decorating kit for my son, and Tinkerbell for my daughter. My son is absolutely crazy about Cars, and I know he is going to have a blast decorating the eggs!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
Every year we make Greek Easter cookies called Koulourakia. My son & daughter always help. We always sing the song “Koulourakia, Koulourakia, me ta dio mas ta herakia” which means Koulourakia, Koulourakia with our two little hands, because making them involves twisting them.
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
The Greek Easter cookies that we make don’t last long at all. That is how delicious they are. If anyone is reading this you must definitely google Greek Easter cookies or Koulourakia recipe, because they are worth making and oh so scrumptious!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
Greek Marigitsa is also something very traditional that we do. This is Greek Rabbit soup/stew, but although people say it is absolutely delicious, and all of my family eats eat, I am one that doesn’t. It probably is really delicious, but I don’t want to eat Rabbit. I just think of Thumper :0(
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
Our Greek Easter is called Pas-ha, and another tradition that we have on Easter is called Tsougrisma. It involves two people and red eggs. Each person holds their red egg and one taps the end of theirs lightly against the others egg. The goal is to crack the other person’s egg! The person who cracks the other persons egg is the winner, and is said to have good luck all year. It is so fun!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
I Saw a Little Bunny
I saw a little bunny
going hop, hop, hop
I said, Please Mr. Bunny,
won’t up stop, stop, stop.
He flapped his big, long ears
and had no word to say.
And before I could get near him
he had hop, hop, hopped away!
Donna
I don’t usually do Easter baskets for my kids, because my sister always buys these huge baskets for my kids, and I think two would be too much, but this Easter basket would be absolutely perfect!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
Easter is right around the corner, and that means warmer weather finally! and my birthday is right around the corner too!

Hi loved and died
When He was being beaten and spat upon
When His flesh was being torn by the whip
When His back was scourged,
Then he saw me being baptized
and so He permitted them to do so.
When the crown was crushed into His head
When He tasted His own blood
When the thorns pierced HIs flesh,
Then He saw me praying
and so He killed them not.
When His cross was so heavy that he fell
When He carried wood on His torn flesh
When He wished simply to move no more,
Then He saw me in confession,
and so He got up and walked on.
When His hands were being pierced
When He hung from a cross
When HIs side was bellding,
Then He said I love YOU
and so He died.
Donna
My mother makes the most amazing Grapeleavs with lemon sauce for Easter. They are absolutely delicious!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
I like Bambi
I am crossing my fingers and toes that I am 1 of the 2 that wins this Easter basket. My kids would be absolutely thrilled, and so would I! What a nice Easter surprise this would be!

I remember getting teased when Easter was right around the corner when I was in Elementary School/Junior High, because I sometimes celebrated Easter on a different day. I always told people that I was special because I had two Easters and more candy! Greek Orthodox Christian Easter sometimes falls on the same day, but most times it doesn’t. I believe that it is on the same day every 4 years, but I am not exactly sure.

I remember begging my mom and dad for a house bunny for Easter one year, My uncle surprised me and bought me two! But he bought two that were for outside, and he didn’t know but they were male and female, and we had baby bunnies everywhere!!!!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
I remember that one year my mom and dad bought both my sister and I huge chocolate Easter bunnies. We had company that year, as we always do, and my sister’s chocolate bunny disappeared…….We later found my mom’s friends daughter in my sisters room eating it! It was quite funny!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
A popular symbol of the Easter festival, the white lily is held as the traditional Easter Flower. The single flower stem originating from a bulb represents the resurrection of Christ three days after his apparent death by crucifixion. Legend has it that white lilies were grown at the place where drops of blood fell from Jesus Christ’s body. Some Catholic nations regard white lilies as the symbol of the purity and divinity of Jesus Christ and dedicate them to his mother, Virgin Mary. This is the reason why churches are decorated with white lilies during Easter.

Bambi was around with my adult children and grandchildren were babies and will be here for my great grandchildren to enjoy. My favorite character other than Bambi is Thumper. helenkeeler@comcast.net
Still haven’t seen the new movie HOP, but it looks adorable, and I can’t believe that the bunny poops jelly beans! This would be a great movie to see on Easter!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
Easter is very exciting for our family, we always decorate the hard boiled eggs to hunt (and eat later). Have a family dinner and visit with family. The following poem I thought was so dear to Easter that I couldn’t go without posting it!
Here is a question that I’ve been dying to ask,
What is the right style for a proper Easter basket?
Should it be round or oval or square?
Should it be homemade or purchased somewhere?
Would an old milk carton, cut in half
Be ok, or just cause people to laugh?
Should the artificial grass be green, pink or blue?
How do I know what’s the right thing to do?
But whether the basket is brand new or old
The key question is, how much candy will it hold?
I now follow A Happy Hippy Mom on GFC as Helen Keeler. helenkeeler@comcast.net

mmalavec@med.umich.edu
I think tomorrow we will be heading to the mall to get the kids pictures with the Easter Bunny! although I don’t know if my daughter will want to sit in his lap, she is very afraid of Santa Claus. We will see about the Easter bunny!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
If any of you want a special book for Easter for your kids, the Jesus Storybook Bible (I just won a copy) is absolutely wonderful. I haven’t received it yet, but I plan on giving it to my kids for Easter, and it is just beautiful!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
The Bunny as an Easter Symbol comes from Germany! This is something new that I learned today!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
Another thing that I learned today is that the word Easter comes from the word Oestar, the goddess of Spring and renewal. The goddess was very much into spring celebrations, and so the annual tradition begins. I love learning new stuff!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
One of my favorite quotes but with a little Easter in it.
If you get melted chocolate all over your hands while you are eating your chocolate Easter bunny, you are eating it too slowly…….

Easter Egg
The egg is an ancient universal symbol of new life and has
been associated with pagan festivals that celebrated spring.
For Christians, it can represent Jesus’ emergence from the
tomb and resurrection.
Decorating eggs is a tradition that dates to at least the
13th century. One explanation for the custom is that eggs
were formerly a forbidden food during the Lenten season.
People would instead decorate them to mark the end of the
penance period and fasting, and then eat them on Easter to
celebrate.
ncjeepster@aol.com
Have any of you tried natural dye for Easter Eggs?
You can do different colors with different things.
Like for Orange you can use Onion Skins!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
Easter Traditions
Eating Ham- Before the invention of refrigeration, mankind
would have to cure their meat for winter storage and
consumption. The Easter feast was the perfect time to use up
the last of the stored meat.
ncjeepster@aol.com
I love Easter because I love my faith and this is a day that symbolizes all things new to me.
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
my kids would just love this
Oh how could I forget……I love Cadbury Chocolate Eggs this time of year! Yummy!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
Easter Traditions
Colors- The use of color is a popular Easter tradition. Green is said to represent Spring and the rebirth of the Earth. Red
is a symbol of Christ’s blood. White represents purity and birth. Yellow is for light and purity. Orange is for endurance and strength. Brown stands for Mother Earth and her many gifts. Blue is for the blue skies of air. Purple represents fasting. It is believed that many colors used in combination represents the burst of color brought forth when plants begin to bloom and trees begin to leaf.

My favorite Bambie character is Thumper!
At Easter In Germany, eggs used for cooking are not broken but are emptied by blowing the contents into a bowl through pinholes
at either end of the hen’s egg. The hollow eggs are then died and hung from shrubs and trees during Easter week.
They have an egg tree. This is a small tree branch put in a vase about two weeks before Easter. Real eggs that have been
painted and decorated are hung from the branches. Other small, highly decorated eggs the family has collected are also hung on the tree.
My favorite Bambi character is Thumper.
Back in Germany Easter Traditions
Children play a game called Chocolate Kiss
Chocolate Kiss is played with chocolate-covered marshmallows.
The object of the game is to gobble up marshmallows without allowing others to smear your face with the chocolate. The winner is the person who can eat the most chocolate marshmallows with the cleanest face.
Sorry husband has German ancestors so we know a lot about traditionsl

Love Easter!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
I am kind of happy that Greek Orthodox Easter fell on the same day this year! It usually is different, although that sometimes works in your benefit because you get everything at a discount when your Easter is later…
mmalavec@med.umich.edu

Red is for the blood he gave.
Green is for the grass he made.
Yellow is for the sun so bright.
Orange is for the edge of night.
Black is for the sins we made.
White is for the Grace he gave.
Purple is for his hour of sorrow.
Pink is for our new tomorrow.

mmalavec@med.umich.edu
There are many recipes online for Greek Tsoureki (Greek Easter bread) and you must try one. I guarantee you will love it! But, if you don’t feel like making it, if your town has a Greek town, you definitely will find some there during Easter!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu

We will be going to Easter at around 11 o’clock at night on Saturday. Church ends between 12-1:30 because people go have Mageritsa. Greek Easter soup!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
For Easter (Greek Orthodox) we light candles in the church, and then walk outside around the church 3 times. I remember one year my sister burned some of my mothers hair. It is always a fear of mine every Easter that someone walking too close will burn my hair!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
We also sing a hymn when we walk around the Church builiding and move our candles that we hold up down and side to side to symbolize the cross.
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
I will have to ask my mother today when we are going to start making our Greek Easter cookies. I think there has to be a certain day you do it, but I can’t remember. I will have to ask her.
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
When we roast the lamb in the back yard, it is funny because everyone always stands in front of the spit, and nibbles off of it. When it is time to eat it, the majority of it is already gone! That is how delicious it is. We have never not roasted a lamb on the spit for Easter.
mmalavec@med.umich.edu

mmalavec@med.umich.edu

My favorite way to decorate Easter eggs is with a white crayon. Boil the eggs and let them cool a bit (or the crayon will melt). Then decorate the egg with the white crayon. When you dip the egg into the coloring, the white will show up. 🙂
I hope that everyone has a beautiful Easter!

Funny Bunny
by Grandpa Tucker
Little Easter, the comedienne bunny,
Tried too hard at being funny.
She juggled and she dropped the eggs
They fell and smashed between her legs.
Poor Easter left the stage in shame
And thought that she might change her name.
But then that bunny read this ad,
“This Sunday we need help real bad.”
So Easter Bunny kept her name
And through the years has gained much fame,
When Easter’s Sunday comes each year.
She delivers eggs and we all cheer.
The Easter Bunny- Some consider him a distant cousin of Santa Claus, both deliver candy and toys to children on the eve of a major holiday. Rabbits are an ancient symbol of fertility and new life, and as such, are the perfect spokesanimal for the arrival of Spring. It is believed the Easter Bunny arrived in America with German immigrants, who referred to
him as “Osterhase”. Osterhase was an egg laying hare who visited children and left brightly colored eggs in nests the
children built for him.
We love haveing Easter Egg Hunts with my siblings kids…the more the marrier!

I think making a cute festive cupcake for Easter with kids is a great idea. A bunny, a chic. There are so many to choose from.
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
I can’t wait until my children really understand the true meaning of Easter. They are still young, but I really do try with books.

Just talked to my sister and I think she is going to be making Strawberry Shortcake for dessert for Easter! We are going to have so many sweets!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
My mom is probably definitely making Karithopita, which is Greek Walnut cake. It is so…..delicious! So far for Easter, we have so many desserts that people are bringing, but our family sure loves sweets.
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
Some of the things that we will be eating for Easter are:
Grapeleaves
Rice with homemade yogurt
Roasted Lamb
Greek lemon potatoes
This is making me hungry!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
Easter Eggs- Eggs are also a symbol of fertility and have linked back to ancient Pagan celebrations welcoming the
arrival of Spring. From a Christian point of view, eggs are said to represent Christ’s emergence from the cave. Eggs were
once a forbidden food during Lenten, so they would be decorated and saved until Easter Sunday, when they could be
eaten.
ncjeepster@aol.com
Hot Cross Buns- It is believed that Hot Cross Buns originated with the Pagan celebration of Ostara (the arrival of Spring). They are traditoinally decorated with a white cross, said the represent Christ’s crucifixion. Many superstitions follow the buns: some say a bun baked on Good Friday will not mold for the remainder of the year, sharing a bun with another is said to ensure friendship through the coming year, buns are purported to protect against shipwrecks and if hung in the kitchen, perfectly baked buns are to protect against fire.
The Easter Parade
What shall I wear for the Easter Parade?
A dress that’s the color of marmalade
With a border embroidered
in light blue cornflowers
Like the edge of a meadow
after spring showers
And a matching hat round
as a top you can spin
And elastic to hold it on under my chin
And brand-new shoes
whiter than newly-poured cream
With heart-shaped,
golden buckles that gleam;
And I’ll carry a small purse
of butterfly blue
With a penny for me and a penny for you
To buy us both glasses of cold lemonade
When we walk, hand in hand,
in the Easter Parade.

For Greek Orthodox tradition Easter eggs are only painted red, but for the kids we let them do whatever they want. I have never tried anything different for Easter eggs on my own, and this year I want to make some fancy Martha Stewart like ones.

For Greek Orthodox Easter at my church we attend church in the evening on Saturday. At midnight all the lights in the church are turned off to symbolize the darkness and silence of the tomb. After sometime a candle is lit and is passed to everyone to symbolize the Resurrection.

The Lamb-
It was said that the devil was allowed to take the form of any animal except for the lamb because of its
religious symbolism. It is believed that meeting a lamb forteold of luck. In some Christian sects, the lamb is used to represent Jesus.
I never knew this about the date Easter falls on:
Date of Easter
The method for determining the date of Easter is complex and has been a matter of controversy , Put as simply as possible, the Western churches (Catholic and Protestant) celebrate Easter on the first Sunday following the first full moon after the spring equinox.
But it is actually a bit more complicated than this. The spring equinox is fixed for this purpose as March 21 (in
2004, it actually falls on March 20) and the “full moon” is actually the paschal moon, which is based on 84-year “paschal cycles” established in the sixth century, and rarely corresponds to the astronomical full moon. These complex
calculations yield an Easter date of anywhere between March 22 and April 25.
The Eastern churches (Greek, Russian, and other forms of Orthodoxy) use the same calculation, but based on the Julian
calendar (on which March 21 is April 3) and a 19-year paschal cycle.
Thus the Orthodox Easter sometimes falls on the same day as the western Easter (it does in 2010 and 2011), but the two
celebrations can occur as much as five weeks apart. In the 20th century, discussions began as to a possible
worldwide agreement on a consistent date for the celebration of the central event of Christianity. No resolution has yet
been reached.

Deer memories…
As a little girl, I always dressed up for Easter,
and we went to see” Bambi” one year.
It was new at the theater, and I couldn’t wait to see it,
The animals were larger than life and so dear!
Now I am older, and I take a little child for walks in the park,
And we see the deer at the edge of the forest,
peaceful in the shadows, family with fawns,
And we share the beauty, it is the best!
i can’t wait to color easter eggs
The 1st Easter I remember, after Church we went to my Grandma’s house and my Dad hid candy eggs for us to find. I was so proud of my Dad helping us kids have a good time. I also remember at Store parking lots, you could buy colored Chicks, now I know how sad that was to put them through all that, but we got one for each of us kids, and put in a cardboard box next to the heater. We fed them and loved on them. They would eventually die, now I know better how inhumane that was for the poor little chicks.
ncjeepster@aol.com
When I was eight years old we got a rabbit for Easter. So cuddly and soft, he grew so big. His house was outside our house and when he was bigger you couldn’t just sit him on the ground, he was so fast he would hop away. My Parents would have to chase him and throw a towel over him to pick him up. His claws were sharp!!!!!! We would take him to our Grandparents Farm and let him hop around and lay on the ground and play with him. We finally let him live on the farm. The city was not a place for a hoppy bunny. But we visited him every weekend. He mated and then we had little bunnies…. Bunnies are so sweet!

The tradition of the Easter bunny leaving a basket of treats such as easter eggs and chocolate on Easter is common in America but not in Greece.

flower is my fave on bambi for sure.
The exchange of Easter eggs for Easter dates back to a springtime custom older than Easter itself in which eggs were given as a symbol of rebirth in many cultures.

Bunny, bunny, bunny, with your twitching nose…
Bunny, bunny, bunny your so funny from your head to your toes.
Bunny, bunny, bunny your ears are funny. They are too big for you.
Bunny, bunny, bunny your so funny. Everyone loves you.
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
Have you guys seen the Hip Hop bunny that is rapping? You must google it, it is so cute and so funny!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
My favorite Bambi character is Flower.
Twas the night before Easter and all under the town.
The bunnies were all busy bustling around.
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
The Easter eggs sat on the table just so.
The bunnies could paint them all with a glow.
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
To make them all special, pink – purple and blue…
And some would have stickers and sparkles and glue….
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
When they were dry. so pretty and gay…
“Grab the baskets” the head of bunnies would say.
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
Some bunnies added tissue, others the treats…
Some added confetti, easter cards, and more sweets.
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
They printed out addresses so they would know…
To which gardens the bunnies were sure to go.
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
They gathered their baskets, addresses in hand…
And hopped out the door to the wonderful land….
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
Which way should they go? Who to visit first?
The bunnies were so excited. they thought they would burst.
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
They came to the garden and looked all around…
They had to hide the eggs, so they could be found…
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
Up in the trees, behind flowers, on a gate..
Hurry bunnies, hurry! We can’t be late!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
And so they worked hard, they did not stop…
Their feet, oh how tired, at home how’d they’d flop.
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
But they would not quit until the very last one….
Was hidden away, then home they begun.
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
The sun came out, the bunnies at home.
All the children out in the garden they’d roam.
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
They could not wait to go out and see….
Those colorful eggs that were hidden with glee.
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
They found all those treats and brought them in….
And put them all away in mommy’s special tin.
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
As they ate all the chocolates and sweets that day…
Fast asleep all the bunnies quietly lay…
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
And so the job for the bunnies was done…
And what really mattered is everyone had fun!
Cute poem I found online!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
Almost 8 more days until Easter!

I loved Easter Egg hunts so much as a little girl, I plan elaborate hunts for the kids in my family. Even the “tweens” can’t wait for Easter!
I think Flower was my favorite Bambi character—because I even like skunks in real life—they seem just like smelly kitties to me.
My grandfather gave me a large stuffed bunny for Easter when I was a child, and not only do I still have it, I bring it out every Easter.
I also create an Easter Egg Tree– a large tree branch that I place in a vase and decorate with eggs, bunnies, and other Easter items.
One year I decorated an entire “Easter Tree” with different colored Peeps. It looked great but someone kept eating my decorations!

Easter Is The Gift…
Easter is the gift of HOPE
Easter is the gift of PEACE
Easter is the gift of LOVE
Let us rejoice in Him,
Who gives them all.
May God bless you at Easter,
And keep you all year through.
May God give you all the faith it takes,
To make your dreams come true.
May His love and wisdom always help,
To guide you on your way.
May His light shine down upon you now,
To bless your Easter Day.
Popular Easter Customs
Over the centuries, these religious observances have been supplemented by popular customs, many of were incorporated
from springtime fertility celebrations of European and Middle Eastern pagan religion. Rabbits and eggs, for example, are
widely-used pagan symbols for fertility. Christians view the Easter eggs as symbols of joy and celebration (as they were
forbidden during the fast of Lent) and of new life and resurrection. A common custom is to hide brightly colored
eggs for children to find.
According to University of Florida’s Center for Children’s Literature and Culture, the origin of the celebration — and the Easter bunny — can be traced back to 13th century, pre-Christian Germany, when people worshiped several gods and goddesses. The Teutonic deity Eostra was the goddess of spring and fertility, and feasts were held in her honor on the Vernal Equinox. Her symbol was the rabbit because of the animal’s high reproduction rate.
A season of growth, a season of renewal….Jesus is the reason for the season.
Easter is almost here!

The Easter Bunny
by M. Josephine Todd, 1909
There’s a story quite funny,
About a toy bunny,
And the wonderful things she can do;
Every bright Easter morning,
Without warning,
She colors eggs, red, green, or blue.
Some she covers with spots,
Some with quaint little dots,
And some with strange mixed colors, too —
Red and green, blue and yellow,
But each unlike his fellow
Are eggs of every hue.
And it’s odd, as folks say,
That on no other day
In all of the whole year through,
Does this wonderful bunny,
So busy and funny,
Color eggs of every hue.
If this story you doubt
She will soon find you out,
And what do you think she will do?
On the next Easter morning
She’ll bring you without warning,
Those eggs of every hue.
Easter is a time of rebirth. When hope can be seen in the wings of a butterfly.
When the grey of winter comes alive with the newness of spring
when all of nature seems to celebrate the wonder of life itself.

Spring is on its way.
Hens getting ready.

Just was talking to my mother today about making Greek Tsoureki (Greek Easter Bread). We usually buy it, but this year we are going to attempt to make it ourselves!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
Someone at worked asked me if we actually kill the lamb that we cook. No, no, no! We definitely buy it!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
I also talked to my mom about Greek Easter cookies, which we call Koulourakia. We will be making those next week!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
Greek Koulourakia are a butter cookie, which are made of dough, which are shaped into a twist. They are excellent by themselves by are so….good with Coffee too. Very traditional cookie for Easter in our Greek culture.

oops I meant — but are so good with coffee too. Sorry..

I hope that everyone is having a beautiful Saturday. We went to go get the kids hair cut. They were both in need of them…..but we waited closer to Easter to go.

Last year my son was 2-years-old at Easter and we decorated a dozen eggs. We hid those eggs over and over and over again. He just didn’t want to stop finding them. This year should be interesting because I suspect my now 3-year-old son will want to hide the eggs for my toddler, but I’m not sure the toddler has the attention span to do much searching this year.
Each year my neighbor hood hosts an Easter Egg Hunt for the kids. The youngest kids, ages 1 and 2, have their eggs hidden on the basketball court. Basically it looks like someone just dumped dozens of eggs all over the cement. Of course, it doesn’t stop the kids from having fun.
Yay Easter! Easter time brings out the best candy! Thank you so much for the wonderful giveaway!

Easter
There is evidence that Christians originally celebrated the resurrection of Christ every Sunday, with observances such as
Scripture readings, psalms, the Eucharist, and a prohibition against kneeling in prayer. {6} At some point in the first
two centuries, however, it became customary to celebrate the resurrection specially on one day each year. Many of the
religious observances of this celebration were taken from the Jewish Passover.
I have a beautiful Steiff stuffed animal of a deer, and it reminds me just of Bambi. Was purchased in Germany on Easter, and it is just beautiful.

Easter in Britain
In many parts of England dancers called “Morris dancers” perform on Easter Sunday. These dances are very old spring
dances to frighten away the veil spirits of winter. The dancers wear white shorts, red sashes, black trousers and
straw hats with lots of flowers and streamers. Red and green ribbons and little bells are tied onto the dancers. As the
dancers move quickly the bells ring and the ribbons wave.

Meeting the Easter Bunny
by Rowena Bennett
On Easter morn at early dawn
before the cocks were crowing
I met a bob-tail bunnykin
and asked where he was going.
“Tis in the house and out the house
a-tispy, tipsy-toeing,
Tis round the house
and ’bout the house a-lighlty I am going.”
ncjeepster@aol.com
There has always been talk about Orthodox Easter being changed so that it always fell on the same day as American Easter, but it has never happened. I don’t think it will.

Carrot cake is definitely one of my favorites….especially for Easter!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
sorry this is the rest of the poem
But what is that of every hue
you carry in your basket?”
“Tis eggs of gold and eggs of blue;
I wonder that you ask it.
“Tis chocolate eggs and bonbon eggs
and eggs of red and gray,
For every child in every house
on bonny Easter day.
He perked his ears
and winked his eye and twitched his little nose;
He shook his tail — what tail he had —
and stood up on his toes.
“I must be gone before the sun;
the east is growing gray;
Tis almost time for bells to chime.”
— So he hippety-hopped away.

mmalavec@med.umich.edu
I have once swore off of Unlimited contests, but this was too good to not comment away on! Can you tell I really, really want it? So cute for Easter!
mmalavec@med.umich.edu
The tradition of chocolate Easter bunnies dates back to 19th-century America, which borrowed it—and the Easter Bunny in general—from Germany. Sales started to take off around 1890, after a Pennsylvania man named Robert L. Strohecker featured a 5-foot-tall chocolate rabbit in his drugstore as an Easter promotion. (Of course, that’s got nothing on the record-setting chocolate rabbit sculptors just completed in a South African shopping mall.)
ncjeepster@aal.com
Chocolate Bunny and Hollow Molds
Hollow molds had entered the picture by 1939, when a newspaper advertisement mentions “hollow chocolate rabbits” sold for five cents each. The bunny business hit a snag in late 1942, when the War Production Board halted the manufacture of all such chocolate novelties, reasoning that cocoa rations should be saved for “staple civilian and military purposes, such as breakfast cocoa and candy bars.” (Ah, yes, the staples of life.)
After World War II, chocolate Easter bunnies returned to the States—as did a soldier named Richard Palmer, in search of an “interesting and novel” business, as Schlott tells it. Palmer founded his chocolate company in 1948, and was soon making a hollow Easter bunny named “Baby Binks” which, oddly enough, was inspired by a dog toy.
“Apparently, his dog at the time had a little bunny rabbit toy, and he looked at the shape and thought, ‘You know, that has kind of a whimsical personality; I could make a chocolate mold like that,’” Schlott says. “So he did, and it’s still in our line today.”

My favorite characters are Flower and the Owl. I love this film, it holds special meaning to me from my childhood 🙂

Easter Candy History: Why Are Chocolate Bunnies Hollow?
From smithsonianmag.com
A colleague recently posed a thought-provoking question: why are so many chocolate Easter bunnies hollow? Isn’t it cruel to disappoint all those little kids, who will bite into what looks like a massive chunk of chocolate and be confronted with emptiness?
Courtesy Flickr user Phil Scoville
The experience inspires a host of sermons and metaphors about how life is full of disappointments, why you shouldn’t judge by appearances, and so on. Chocolate bunnies can be, as this New York Times article puts it, “the child’s first taste of deception.”
Are candy makers conspiring to teach us a lesson?
Of course not. The answer is simple, according to one chocolate maker: hollow bunnies are easier to eat.
“If you had a larger-size bunny and it was solid chocolate, it would be like a brick; you’d be breaking teeth,” says Mark Schlott, vice-president of operations at R.M. Palmer in Reading, Pennsylvania, one of the first and largest manufacturers of hollow chocolate bunnies.
And, of course, hollow is usually cheaper to make, though Schlott phrases it more delicately: “Hollow has a greater perceived value. It creates a much greater chocolate footprint than solid.”
The company now makes about 25 million hollow chocolate bunnies each year, as well as smaller solid bunnies, cream eggs and other seasonally-themed candies. Schlott says sales of hollow bunnies have increased in the past two years, and he thinks it might be connected to the recession.

Our brownie troup makes baskets full of goodies for people in Nursing homes. They really enjoy creating the baskets and filling them up for Easter Gifts. We go to the Nursing Home and it’s so precious watching the little girls with big smiles and big baskets giving them out. The Nursing Home residents look forward to that every year,. They can see how much joy all their work brought to the residents, they all leave with a great feeling.

Easter- Birth, death, and resurrection
Easter- The debt has been paid
My granddaughter says, she is good at hiding eggs, but not so good at finding them.
Easter- The promise fulfilled
My hope lies in the promise of the resurrection.
Tulips and chocolates for my daughter.
Now that we hide plastic eggs only, there are no smelly surprises weeks later.
Easter- chocolate, chocolate, and more chocolate.
We will boil, decorate, and dye eggs for the table.
I am going to make a Lamb cake.
Lettuce will be ready in the garden, fresh salads will be on the menu.
A sunrise service for the family.
A favorite Easter memory, was being woke up to great commotion. My grandfather was banging pots, and had a handful of cotton. In what we thought was great anger, he was ranting that he was gonna kill that damn rabbit that came in his house and left all those baskets. Of course, we pleaded for the rabbits life, before we ran to find and hide our baskets.
My favorite Easter card is one my granddaughter gave me when she was seven. She so understood the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ and the promise it meant for her.
All the boiled eggs will find their way into a Chicken Salad.
I love Easters reminder of an end, and new beginning.
Finding the right Easter outfit is always fun.
We have a ladies only Tea the week of Easter, and sport our dresses and hats, during an awesome breakfast.
Easter is a time of contemplation and thankfulness.
I liked Thumper and Flower.
When I took my son to see Bambi, he screamed and ran out the theater when Bambi’s father was killed. I had forgotten about that part. Children should be prepared.

I love Thumper! The reason is because my daughter Anna is so crazy about him. She laughs he talks and she has memorized his speeches (eating greens is a special treat….). She also has a book about Thumper that she insists on sleeping with every night.
I love Easter because it is a chance to help my kids appreciate the reasons why we live the way we do. I realize not everyone celebrates Easter in a religious way, but being that it is a religious holiday and we are of the Christian faith, I love telling my kids a short but meaningful story each Easter of why we’re celebrating!
Easter brings joy to my heart. Flowers blooming, warmer weather and the kids enjoying the outdoors hunting for eggs.

I seen this great idea I am going to do this year for easter. You take rice krispie treats and use a plastic easter egg as a mold. Make sure use make sure you leave it hollow to fill. Pop easter egg out of mold fill with m&ms jelly beans etc. put both halves together. Then I am going to write everybodies name on them and you them as placecards for dinner.
