Disney is releasing The Odd Life of Timothy Green on Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD, High Definition Digital and On-Demand platforms on December 4, 2012! The movie was one of the year’s most uplifting and enchanting family films and is coming out just in time to enjoy through the holiday season.
My family received an advanced copy of The Odd Life of Timothy Green on Blu-ray. The film is by Peter Hedges and takes place during the beautiful season of autumn in a town named Stanleyville, the pencil capital of the world, in the countryside during a drought. It is about a happily married couple in their thirties who desperately want a child. After several years of failed attempts and exploring every medical option, Cindy and Jim Green get the bad news from Dr. Hunt they need to accept the fact they are unable to get pregnant. After receiving the devastating information, the couple proceed to try to go back to work and on with their day like usual. James went back to making pencils at a factory on the brink of closing and Cindy continued her boring job at the Crudstaff House Pencil Museum.
During the evening upon returning home from their jobs, James decides to cook dinner while Cindy works in the garden. Then the film jumps to showing James helplessly listening to Cindy sobbing in the unused nursery and tries to comfort her. Cindy kisses James and informs him that they are moving on. However, James can’t accept giving up on the idea of having a child quite yet and begins dreaming about what their child would be like. He reaches in his back pocket for a notebook and pencil and starts writing down characteristics of what their son or daughter would have, while ripping off each piece of paper containing the traits and putting them aside. The couple together fills the pages with thoughts of their dream child. Cindy coming down to earth after visualizing their kid scoring the winning goal during a soccer game, gathers up all the papers with the imaginary qualities and places them in a small wooden box James is holding.
Out in the garden James digs a hole in the middle of all the plants and vegetables and the couple gently place the box in the ground burying it under the dirt. Then they both walk back to the house and go to bed. Next the wind begins to pick up and it starts to rain. A gentle light shines on the Green’s residents as the rain falls in sheets from the night sky. Lightning flashes and the rain soaks the freshly dug patch of dirt in the garden. The mud begins to move as if something is arising from below. The thunder cracks loudly and it awakes James and Cindy. James gets up out of bed while Cindy snuggles deeper within her blanket. He goes to secure the screen door that is banging and makes his way to the refrigerator for a drink of milk to be interrupted by a strange shadow that dashes past.
I am not going to tell anymore of the story, since I don’t want to spoil it for those who have not seen the movie. Nonetheless, I am pretty sure you can figure out what happens next! The Odd Life Of Timothy Green is a touching, magical film and is a pleasant reminder of how children are truly gifts from above. We adored the movie and loved the heartwarming message within it. If you have not had the chance to view the movie pick it up for the holidays and sit down with your family to watch this entertaining treat!
