Has anyone in your life been touched by cancer? I think the question should be who hasn’t been touched by cancer? Am I right? It seems like everyone has a family member who was diagnosed with cancer at one time in their life or knows a friend who has a friend who was devastated by the big scary “C” word. With that being said, some people still find the subject a bit taboo and disregard what is going on around them until it slaps them personally in the face. Unfortunately, ignoring it does not make it go away and cancer flourishes on the silence!
Two years ago I had my own cancer scare, which turned out to be nothing. Thank goodness! Although, it wasn’t more than a week after having surgery my sister was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. I was dumbfounded and shattered by the news. However, she stood strong, got the treatment she needed, and is now living proof the horrible disease can be beat. I’m so proud of her!
Cancer is frightening, but far less terrifying these days than years ago! In the past, it used to be when people were diagnosed with cancer it was thought to be an inevitable death sentence. In fact, according to statistics, 60 years ago only 1 out of 3 people diagnosed with cancer survived. Now, thanks greatly in part to the advances in research and the wonderful works of the American Cancer Society, 2 out of 3 people will see more birthdays. But, that is not good enough. There is still lots more work to be done. We need to work together to find a cure and make it 3 out of 3!
For 100 years, the American Cancer Society has been a key contributor to cancer finding cures, providing support, and saving lives. They have been at the forefront of nearly every major cancer breakthrough in recent history, and have 46 Nobel Laureates to show for it. The American Cancer Society has certainly made an enormous difference in the fight against cancer by supporting the best ideas of the brightest cancer researchers. Nevertheless, there were hundreds of important research studies that lacked funding, while 577,000 Americans died of cancer last year. They need your help to change those heartbreaking statistics by joining in the fight!
So, let’s make some noise and help put an end to cancer! Check out the American Cancer Society’s “Silence Won’t Finish the Fight AGAINST Cancer” video! It is under 2 minutes, a way of showing your support, and very inspiring. Then visit ACS to pledge to help finish the fight against cancer by making a donation to help save lives, learn more about enrolling in the Society’s Cancer Prevention Study-3 to find better ways to prevent cancer, or vow to make healthy choices!

i teach with several teachers who have struggled with breast cancer, the clip from the ACS is very inspiring…every year our schools all set out tents for the relay for life and we have a lot of fun while raising money for this great cause!

I prefer to support the ACS over pretty much every other cancer organization. They do great work.
