Having a pet requires you to take responsibility. Your furry friend is reliant on you to feed and water them, make sure they get enough exercise and ensure they get the human interaction and affection they crave. If you’re a dog owner, it’s important to understand how to keep your pooch healthy. Here are some top tips to ensure your best friend looks and feels pawfect.
Exercise
All dogs need exercise. Even if you have a tiny teacup Chihuahua rather than an energetic dalmatian, you need to make sure that your pooch is active enough. Take your dog out for walks, play with them and encourage them to chase balls and fetch toys. If your dog isn’t getting enough exercise, they may put on weight, and inactivity can also affect their mental well-being. Ask your vet if you’re unsure how much exercise your dog needs. Some breeds, especially those that are bred for hunting and working, are likely to be a lot more active than others.
Grooming
As a dog owner, you’re probably familiar with watching your pet pooch emerging from murky waters or muddy puddles with black, matted fur. Dogs will make an effort to groom themselves and keep their coats in order, but there’s a limit to what they can achieve. Try and brush your dog’s fur on a regular basis, especially if they are long-haired or they enjoy exploring when you’re out and about. If you have a dog with a long coat or you don’t have much time available, look into local dog grooming services. When you take your pup to the grooming parlor, the team can shampoo the fur and brush the coat, as well as providing services like cutting the nails and brushing the teeth. You could even treat your pup to a doggy-friendly facial and pedicure.
Diet
Your dog’s diet isn’t just important for maintaining a healthy weight. A good, balanced diet will also ensure that your pooch is getting all the nutrients they need. A healthy dog should have a glossy coat and bright eyes. If you’re not sure which food to buy, ask your vet for advice and look out for foods that are designed for specific breeds or for puppies, adults or senior dogs. If your dog is prone to health problems, you may be able to find specialist foods that will alleviate symptoms, for example, foods that improve mobility in the joints.
Pest control
It’s very common for pet owners to encounter unwanted pests. To prevent fleas, comb your dog’s fur daily and keep up to date with preventative flea and worm treatments, which are available from your vet. If you notice your dog scratching more than usual or you spot flecks in their fur, contact your vet, vacuum the house from top to bottom and wash bedding, towels and your dog’s blankets on a hot wash.
If you’re a dog owner, it’s essential to understand the importance of caring for your pooch and doing everything possible to keep them in tip-top condition. Hopefully, this guide will help to ensure your precious pet looks pawfect for many years to come.

I’ve heard fleas can be a big problem in some places. Luckily Colorado isn’t very conducive to them.

We get our Chihuahua mix the Seresto collar to protect against fleas and ticks. I’ve started to cut her nails on my own…took a long time to muster up the nerve…but it gets better the more I do it.

This is a great guide to live by and set into action. I am a proud dog owner and do my best to see that she is always cared for. The only thing I have a hard time with is brushing her teeth, but that wasn’t on the list.
