You don’t have to be a Certified Environmental Professional to recognize that plastic pollution is a global epidemic. There is no denying it and it is growing at an enormous rate. To say it is out of control is a gross understatement. The disgusting fact is 300 million tons of plastic is produced globally each year with only a WHOPPING 9% of it being recycled! What happens to the rest of it? An estimated seven million tons finds it way into the sea each year.
Great Pacific Garbage Patch
According to a recent report in the journal Nature, the giant mass of floating plastic trash in the Pacific Ocean, known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, is now twice the size of Texas! First discovered in the early 1990s, the giant mass of floating plastic trash now measures almost 620,000 square miles and is located between Hawaii and California. Unfortunately, unless there is a major intervention of cleaning it up, it is expected to keep increasing at a rate of 2% each year.
Disastrous for marine life
As you can imagine, the discarded plastic is disastrous for marine life. UNEP warns that by 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the world’s oceans! If something isn’t done to clean up the mess, it could cause 800 different species to go extinct.
Last month, it was reported a young sperm whale was found dead on beach at Cabo de Palos, southern coast of Spain, with 64 pounds of plastic in its stomach. His intestines could not eliminate all the plastic that his gut could not break down, causing gastric shock. Such a sad story! However, he was just one of the casualties from the plastic pollution. Statistics show more than 300,000 marine mammals and over a million seabirds each year die from eating plastic. If something isn’t done to get the plastic pollution under control, the problem is only going to become more catastrophic.
Are you eating plastic too?
The health impacts of this enormous floating pile of plastic garbage is yet to be seen. Over time the plastics breakdown into smaller pieces. The microplastics attract chemicals to them. Fish eat these tiny pieces of plastic. Eventually, the fish could make it to our dinner plates and we are eating the plastic too! It is a nasty chain of events that could directly affect our health.
What can you do?
The plastic pollution problem is not going to magically disappear. Thankfully, to a very young 23-year-old and the founder and CEO of The Ocean Cleanup, Boyan Slat is working on cleaning up the mess. However, with 1 million plastic bottles estimated to be sold every minute around the world and only 14% are recycled, the battle is endless. We need to COLLECTIVELY cut down on plastic consumption! You can do your part by kicking the bottled beverage habit in your home for good!

Encourages water drinking
Looking to drink more water? I know for us individuals who are watching our waste line, drinking more water is a key to weight management! Sodastream users on the average drink more water than those without a Sodastream. Why? Because SodaStream makes drinking water more exciting and it is fun to make your own carbonated drinks. A recent survey among 3,680 Americans (age 18+) showed Sodastream owners consume about 3 more glasses of water-based beverages a day compared to those who don’t have a machine.
Healthier alternative to bottled soda
Get creative and ditch the bottle soda! Nearly half of Americans drink soda daily. I don’t even need to go into the ugly details about the chemicals found in bottled soda. Dyes, Carmel coloring, artificial sweeteners and other nasty additives found in the ingredients are overlooked by diehard soda lovers DAILY!
Why not make your own soda? At least you know what you are putting into your body. All you need is a SodaStream to make seltzer water and some organic juice like pomegranate, lemon, or cranberry. SodaStream Aqua Fizz Sparkling Water Maker
SodaStream offers several different products to fit consumers’ budgets and needs. The newest to their product line is the Aqua Fizz Sparkling Water Maker. It was introduced at the International Home + Housewares Show last year and was made available at retailers back in June 2017.
Eliminates the use of plastic bottles
The Aqua Fizz brand was designed to attract water seekers while the SodaStream brand is designed to attract soda users. The machine comes with two beautiful glass carafes to eliminate the use of plastic bottles entirely. It is a more sophisticated looking machine in comparison, but still is simple and fun to use as the original SodaStream Sparkling Water Makers.
Sparkling water in seconds
Aqua Fizz makes fresh sparkling water in seconds! With just a few touches of a button, the machine delivers fresh sparkling water in a stylish glass carafe. No batteries or electricity is needed, so the sparkling water maker can be used virtually anywhere and perfect for entertaining. The machine is powered by the SodaStream CO2 carbonators which are available for purchase at about 10,000 retail locations in the US.
Adds a nice elegant touch and can be used anywhere.
We have been enjoying Aqua Fizz and love the new sparkling water system. It makes it fun to try out new sparkling water beverages with adding fresh fruit, such as raspberries and blueberries. The SodaStream machine adds a nice elegant touch by being able to serve sparkling water from a beautiful glass carafe and looks fantastic on the dining room table instead of a plastic bottle. As far as the machine itself, it features an easy to clean stainless steel body and looks fantastic on the counter or on a stand. We placed ours in the game room for now, but it can be easily moved from room to room. AND because it doesn’t use any electricity, it doesn’t need to be next to an outlet or will raise your energy bill!
Assembles in a few easy steps.
Assembly only takes a few seconds. Basically, you remove the back cover and screw the cylinder into the cylinder holder and replace the back cover. It can be a bit tricky to fit the gas cylinder into the container, because it looks like it doesn’t fit. However, once you release you have to set it in there flat first than lift it up straight into the top holder, it screws in perfectly. Also, the extra glass bottle is located inside the stainless-steel flask. Turn the flask lever to the right, to the unlocked position (machine head will rise automatically) and remove it for washing before use.
Cylinder Exchange
Once the cylinder is empty, it can be brought to any participating local retailer for exchange. The store will take your used cylinder and exchange it for a full cylinder for only the price of the gas. Some retailers that exchange the empty cylinders for full ones, include Bed Bath & Beyond, Best Buy, Staples, Target, Wal-Mart, and Williams-Sonoma.
Makes a great gift!
If you are looking to ditch bottled and canned carbonated soft drinks, the SodaStream Aqua Fizz Sparkling Water Maker is a great solution! The machine easily transforms ordinary tap water into sparkling water and flavored sparkling water in seconds. It is also a great environmentally friendly (no more plastic bottles), cost effective gift that helps promote health and wellness for individuals who are looking to drink more water.
The premium sparkling water maker, Aqua Fizz, retails at $179 and is available for purchase at retailers or online at www.sodastreamusa.com .
