National Donut Day is fast approaching! Celebrated on the first Friday of every June (June 7^th this year), the glorious day is a way for donut enthusiasts to sink their teeth into a delicious treat without none of the guilt.

It seems like there is a holiday for just about anything these days, but there is actually some great history behind National Donut Day. The holiday was created back in 1938 by the Salvation Army as a way to raise funds for World War I and honor the women who served doughnuts to soldiers during the war.

Unfortunately, throughout the years the day has lost most of its history and its just a day of sweet indulgence. However, the donut shops are helping to keep the tradition alive and celebrate the occasion by giving away free donuts! YUM!

How to Celebrate National Donut Day

How do you plan on celebrating National Donut Day? Here are some ideas:

Buy a box of donuts and surprise a beloved neighbor. A kind gesture goes a long way and might put a needed smile on a neighbor who could use a little bit of sweet attention.
Donate a few dollars to the Salvation Army in remembrance to why the delicious holiday was created. Pursuing its mission since 1865, the Salvation Army continues to help those in need. The international movement assist approximately 25 million Americans annually.
Have a donut party! Invite friends to bring a box of their favorite donuts and catchup while sharing scrumptious baked delights and a pot of coffee.
Try baking donuts with your kiddos! The day is a great way to make an excuse to put everything aside for a few hours and create some memories with your children. Try various recipes and decorate with an assortment of candies and sprinkles.

Our Creation-Summer Fling Donut

We are celebrating National Donut Day by putting a flavor spin on our favorite Entenmann’s® donuts! Using the “Flavor Maker”, we chose the base to be chocolate, strawberry glaze, and added toppings of red sprinkles and crumb.

Next, we created the donut at home to test it out! It was absolutely delicious! It embarks everything summer represents! Sweet strawberries, decadent chocolate, and fun sprinkles! So, we named our creation the Summer Fling Donut!

Try using the “Flavor Maker” and create the different combinations at home. Then enter your favorite in the Entenmann’s Fan Flavor Challenge & Sweepstakes for the chance to have your donut featured during the holiday season, $5,000, and a year’s supply of donuts!
