You’ve got a huge spot in your home that you’re thinking of filling with a big fish aquarium. They’re gorgeous to look at and you think fish would make a great first pet for your child.
What fish should you fill your tank with, though? There are a lot of beautiful aquarium fish for you to choose from. You could go with the basic goldfish or something a little more playful like Oscars.
There’s also the matter of keeping them alive. This is your first real aquarium and you don’t want to kill the fish on accident.
Perhaps we could help make the decision a little easier for you. Here a few fish that would make a great addition to your tank.
1. Neon Tetras
Neon tetras are perfect for your aquarium starter kits because they are so low maintenance. They eat almost any food and require their water to be at tropical temperatures.
The only thing that you should keep in mind is that they like to be with other neon tetras. You’ll want to buy a few of them at once rather than only one.
They come in bright colors, so if you don’t have a lot of light in your aquarium you’ll be able to see these fish anyway.
2. Guppies
Another fish that’s good for beginners is a guppy. They aren’t too picky about the temperature of their water, which makes them pretty easy to care for. Like the neon tetra, they don’t like to be alone.
You’ll need to get a group of four or more guppies to start with. Like with most species, the males are more colorful than the females. Keep this in mind if you don’t want to deal with a bunch of baby guppies in your tank.
They will be happy with a mixture of animal and plant-based foods.
3. Oscars
Oscars are cute because they are intelligent. You can train them to do all sorts of tricks. They will even eat food out of your hand if you let them.
They are carnivorous which means that they require a bit more maintenance than the other fish on this list. They also create a large amount of waste so be ready to clean out the tank often.
4. Bettas
Betta fish are one of the most popular freshwater fish due to their gorgeous colors. They are also pretty easy to care for.
Keep in mind that if you put two males in the same tank, they will fight to the death. They’ll also try to fight if they can see another betta through the glass (or their reflection), so keep multiple bettas isolated from each other and away from mirrors.
Betta fish aren’t too picky about what they eat. They will eat both plant and animal-based foods.
