Our cats and dogs are a part of our families. Just like human toddlers, these furry babies are curious about everything under the sun. Flowers and plants are no different. Not only do they jump, scratch, lick and nibble at flowers and plants, they will also sometimes swallow the whole thing! As the last thing we want is any harm to come to our tail-wagging babies, it is good be aware of flowers and plants that are safe to have around pets. Here is a list of flowers and plants that are pet-friendly. Pet-friendly flowers are easily available with all leading Sydney florist who promise to door-step deliver fresh blooms on same day around the city.
Roses
All of over 100 species of Roses (Rosacea family) are considered safe for your fur babies. These short, perennial shrubs are chemically harmless for cats, dogs and even horses but the thorns of long-stemmed roses can be potentially dangerous for their safety, leading to scratches and wounds. However, not all plants or flowers with roses attached to their names are as innocent. Primrose, Christmas rose, desert rose, rosebay, and moss rose (which is a succulent) may be dangerous to our furry friends.
Gerbera Daisy
Blooming in the most vibrant shades of pink, red, yellow, and white, gerbera daisies are extremely popular and also 100% pet-friendly flowers that pet parents can safely adore.
Orchids
Orchids are perhaps the safest and most inoffensive plants to have around our pets. There is nothing to worry even if they decide to have a bite. If you are, however, worried about your curious kitten spoiling your precious orchids, just dust these with cayenne or cinnamon powder. Cats hate the smell and will leave your orchids alone.
Sunflower
The big, bright, and yellow sunflowers (Helianthus spp.) can brighten anyone’s day in a snap. What’s even better news, there is nothing toxic about these sun-loving blooms. This goes for both animals and humans.
Marigolds
With an uncanny resemblance to daisies and carnations these gorgeous flowers usher in a dose of sunshine- happiness with petals in different shades of gold, copper, and orange. They are not only safe, they also come with great health benefits. The petals and leaves can be applied on cuts and wounds and used as antiseptics, even for your pets.
Aster
Asters are pet-friendly flowers and come in tints of pink, blue and white. Charming and daisy- like, they can brighten up your garden-space without harming your beloved pets.
Zinnia
Good-looking and pet-friendly, Zinnias are considered safe for your cats and dogs. This member of the daisy family looks similar to dahlias and daisies and are prolific bloomers.
Though these flowers are safe for your pets, it is always best to keep plants and flowers out of your pets’ reach. Also, it’s advisable to completely avoid toxic flowers like Lily (Tiger Lily, Easter Lily, Stargazer Lily etc), Tulips, Daffodils, Iris, Poinsettia, Oleander etc, if you are sending and receiving bouquets, as these can cause serious harm to your pets.
