All animal charities have something in common. The people behind the organization realize animals need protection. Those organizations deserve support because they want to help animals in the wild and those that are stuck in shelters. Here are eight groups that need your help.
Humane Society of the United States
The Humane Society of the United States is one of the oldest animal charities. The organization was founded in 1954 to end suffering for all animals. This group targets animal cruelty on a large scale. The Humane Society is opposed to cruel activities like cosmetic testing on animals. Further, they’re working to end the extreme confinement of farm animals. When there’s a national disaster, Humane Society volunteers are on the front line to rescue animals.
Shaggy Friends
Have you heard of online stores that donate to animals? A store called Shaggy Friends does exactly that. Shaggy Friends was started by a dog-loving family that wants to stop animal euthanasia. They sell unique dog-themed clothing and accessories. Ten percent of all sales go to support rescue dogs and no-kill animal shelters.
Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International
The film Gorillas in the Mist told the story of Dian Fossey and her work to conserve African gorillas. Fossey was killed by individuals who wanted to poach the majestic animals. Her work lives on through this organization that protects gorillas and their African habitat. Additionally, the charity continues to research gorillas and their eco-systems. Fossey thought it was important that gorillas could be taught to communicate. Preventing the extinction of the mountain gorilla is among the charity’s accomplishments.
World Wildlife Fund
This global charity supports many activities aimed at helping animals. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) supports research in several areas including climate change. Climate change impacts animals all around the world. For instance, global warming is shrinking areas where polar bears roam. This causes animals to attempt changing locations and often leads to their extinction. Eight out of 10 species of land animals live in forests. WWF wants to stop illegal logging—the major cause of deforestation around the world.
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA)
The ASPCA is the oldest animal charity in the U.S. The charity’s main belief is that humans owe it to animals to protect them. This charity boasts more than two million supporters. They work through the legal system and on the community level. The ASPCA is a major champion for animal adoption.
African Wildlife Foundation
This organization was founded in 1961 to work for wildlife conservation in Africa. Further, the charity supports land and habitat protection and economic development in Africa. The African Wildlife Foundation supports 60 animal species and has 12 million acres under its protection.
Snow Leopard Trust
This charity supports the snow leopard’s existence in five of 12 countries where the animal lives. These nations include Pakistan, Mongolia, India, China, and Kyrgyzstan. 75 percent of the snow leopard population lives in these countries. Indeed, the charity is the global authority on the protection of the endangered leopard.
Puppies Behind Bars
Puppies Behind Bars help veterans who need service dogs. Prison inmates are trained to raise service dogs for wounded veterans. Along with helping veterans, the charity gives inmates a purpose while they’re away from society. The charity is supported by many who like the “help” chain. The group’s activities help animals, prison inmates, and wounded veterans.
