There are approximately 50 million adults over the age of 65 in the United States. As people get older, their needs and living conditions may change. Whether you are a senior or you care for someone over the age of 65, below are some options for seniors that you may find helpful.
1. Senior Living
As people age, they may want or need to change their living situation. Even those who can live independently may want to live closer to others their age. Or perhaps they want to move into an assisted living center where they can have help nearby, yet still have the freedom and independence they crave. There are many options for seniors when it comes to housing. Some communities are for 65 and older, and there are also assisted living centers and nursing homes. All of these offer a varying level of independence based on need or desire.
2. Rehabilitation
Some seniors may need additional care for injuries, dementia, or Alzheimer’s. Rehabilitation may be important in helping them to retain some independence. Even if the senior lives with a friend or family member or in an assisted living center or nursing home, rehabilitation for dementia can be important in helping seniors get through everyday life while dealing with injury or illness.
3. Utility Assistance
When living on your own, it can be difficult to pay bills and keep up with utilities. During the winter and summer months, heating and cooling bills can end up much higher than average. This can cause a great strain on finances. There is assistance for seniors with their utility bills. It may be beneficial to check with your local community services to see what programs they provide.
4. Companionship
Many seniors may end up living alone. This can cause a sense of loneliness that may, in turn, cause depression or other emotional issues. Seniors can hire someone to come and live with them as a full-time caregiver or have someone come and visit for companionship. Having someone come by the house regularly can have a great impact on the potential loneliness an elderly person may feel.
5. Social Clubs
Seniors being able to join others for activities can be an exciting part of the day. Check with your local senior center to see what activities they offer. You may be able to join or start up a gardening club, reading club, book club, or even an exercise club with other seniors in the area. Getting together even once or twice a week can improve the overall wellness of seniors.
Social interaction can benefit the elderly in many ways. Studies have shown it can reduce the risk of many medical conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease. There are many opportunities for seniors that can keep them active and social. Check your local area to see what resources are available. If your area is lacking in resources and activities, you may want to get in touch with someone who can help to start up programs for the elderly.

Your tip about how senior care can provide companionship really caught my eye. Grandpa Jordan has been living with our family for quite some time but since we’ve gotten busier jobs, it’s been harder to go and visit him, and I want to make sure he doesn’t get lonely when we’re away. With this in mind, I’ll be looking for any senior living advisors and assisted living services we can call to help us out with Granpda Jordan until we can visit again. Thank you!
