In the tradition of “Smallville,” “Supergirl,” and other DC favorites, a new hero has emerged. “Stargirl” is the latest creation of executive producer Geoff Johns. The series premiered in May 2020, and was renewed for a second season, which is scheduled for the CW’s 2021 lineup.
Show Premise
Characters from “Stargirl” were first introduced in the sixth Arrowverse crossover, “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” in January 2020, to whet committed fans’ appetites for the series premiere on May 18, 2020. The story begins ten years after the Justice Society of America was defeated by the Injustice Society of America, and this history sets the stage for a new generation and a new hero. Courtney Whitmore discovers the legendary Starman’s Cosmic Staff among her stepdad Pat’s belongings. She learns that Pat was the sidekick to Starman, and he agrees to help her learn to harness its power for good. What starts out as a prank gone wrong when an errant blast from the staff destroys a car develops into an adventure of fighting evil villains as well as high school bullies. As the season progresses, viewers learn more about the legacy that Stargirl has inherited through the staff.
Recurring Themes
Each episode of “Stargirl” showcases both historic fights and the ongoing battle between good and evil that viewers expect. Courtney teams up with Pat to fight villains as she and the audience learn more about the heroes who came before her. She also resists the everyday injustices to which most high school students can relate, such as class bullies and arguments with their parents. Several critics have highlighted the way the show addresses the relationship between Courtney and her stepfather, praising the way the writers portray a familial adjustment that is often difficult with humor and understanding.
