My Thoughts
With the principles “good friends stick together,” the Thomas & Friends: Sticky Situations DVD encourages friendship, discovery, and teamwork. All the things preschoolers should be taught at an early age for building a productive existence!
I sat down and watched the four episodes with my son. They all had some important message to be learned, but my favorite was “Stuck On You.” In this tale, Thomas is all excited about Sir Topham Hatt giving him a new special job to be the Sodor Island rescue engine with the help of Butch the breakdown truck.
Butch was waiting for Thomas at the Steamworks, where he is being fitted with a strong magnet. He was happy to see Thomas and they both were very eager to get going and be ready for action. Thomas thinking he knew everything there was to know about magnets, decides to race off with Butch before listening to what Victor had to say. Victor told them to wait for the red light, then they would know the magnet was on. But Thomas was too excited to stop and chuffed quickly away without hearing the instructions.
The two clattered into the Sodor Search and Rescue Center. It wasn’t long before the bell rang and an emergency call came in for them to take metal poles to Farmer McColl right away, because his sheep shelter was blown down and he needed them to build a new one. Butch raced to pick up the metal poles, but the magnet wouldn’t pick up anything. Trying to get the magnet to work, Butch kept bashing and crashing the poles until they finally fell into the sea next to Captain. Thomas wasn’t worried and told Butch they could just pick up more poles at the yard. Before the two could race to the yard, Rocky already had another rescue for them. Rosie has a cracked wheel and needs a new one immediately.
Butch backs up to the replacement wheel and asks Thomas about the red light. Thomas tells him not to worry about the red light and that he knows about magnets. He further encourages Butch he was ready for action. Butch tried hovering his marvelous magnet over the wheel, but nothing happened. Trying even harder to pick up the wheel with his magnet, Butch tipped and tapped so hard against the wheel it rolled away and crashed into Rocky.
Butch finally comes to the conclusion there is something wrong with his magnet and Thomas agreed. Then an idea flew into his funnel to have Butch see if the magnet would stick to him being that he was metal. Next, Butch drove carefully up to Thomas. Suddenly, the red light flicked on, but Thomas didn’t see it turn on. Neither did Butch. The magnet was activated and with a big bang it stuck tight to the side of Thomas. Then Thomas asks Butch to lift it off, but he couldn’t figure out how to get it to come loose. Not being able to remove the magnet, Thomas finally realizes he should have listened to Victor. The only solution was to go back and ask Victor what to do.
The two hurried back to Steamworks to find Victor, passing other engines on the way. They grinned and giggled at Thomas, noticing the magnet stuck to his side. Thomas knew he looked silly, but Victor would be able to help them and they would work perfectly again.
At the Steamworks, Victor couldn’t help smiling at the fact the magnet was stuck to Thomas. He explained to them about how the red light must be on to know the magnet is working. Thomas told Butch to turn the red light off and the magnet falls from him. Now the two are ready for action again and the rescue engines race back to Sodor Search and Rescue Center. Understanding how the magnet finally worked, Thomas and Butch were now useful once again!
The short story gives a friendly lesson in being able to listen to instructions, as well as the message that even if you think you know everything about a subject there is always something more to be learned!
