If you or someone you love has recently undergone a surgical procedure, you’re probably pretty uncomfortable and discombobulated right now. That’s normal, and there’s no getting around the fact that you aren’t exactly going to feel your best for a while, but there are several things you can do to at least speed up the post-surgery healing process.
Check out these tried and tested tips for healing quickly after surgery:
Do What the Doctor Says
First, and most importantly of all, you should always do exactly what the doctor tells you to, whether that means not lifting anything heavy, changing your dressing daily or administering medication. Some of the things your doctor tells you to do might seem silly or unnecessary, but they are the experts, and you ignore them at your peril.
Eat Right
One of the most common side effects of anesthesia after surgery is nausea, so you might not feel like eating after surgery, but your body has just been through a major ordeal, and it needs you to do what you can to nurse it back to health again. So, as soon as you are able, start eating as healthily as possible.
If you want to avoid nausea, ginger tea can be good, so drink it liberally along with lots of healthy proteins to help your wounds heal, fruit and veg to give you a vitamin and mineral boost and plenty of probiotics to give your immune system a boost. Do this, and you’ll be up and running in no time at all.
Move Around
You’ve just been through surgery, so you can be forgiven for wanting to take to your bed and stay there for as long as possible, but it probably won’t do you any good. In most cases, unless your doctor has told you otherwise, getting up and about as soon as you can walk will benefit your body. It will help to prevent the formation of blood clots, decrease your risk of pneumonia and help your bowels to spring back into action, so you’ll be more comfortable.
Maintain Personal Hygiene
When a part of your body has just been cut open and stitched back up, and you’re in a lot of pain, it might not be easy to get up to the bathroom and take a shower, but it is vital that you stay as clean and healthy as you can if you want to heal quickly and avoid infections when your immune system is already under strain.
Ask for Help
You might be a naturally proud person, but now is not the time to do it all yourself. Your friends and family will be only too happy to help you out if you’re struggling with pain and unable to cook, clean or shop for yourself. Let them do this by asking for help when you need it, and you’ll heal more quickly and be less likely to need additional help in the future.
As I said at the beginning of this post, taking doctor’s’ orders and continuing to do so until you’re fully healed is the most important thing you can do post-surgery, but doing the other things on this list will lead to results and have you back to your normal self sooner, too.

After both my surgeries, I remember the nurses getting me up and moving almost immediately. They joked about giving me another catheter if I didn’t go to the bathroom soon.
