Many people suffer from drug or alcohol addiction. It is not until they are receiving help or have lost everything that they fully understand the extent of their problems. Many people who have an addiction are caught up in their own world and the drugs are taking over their mind and body. It is at this point that many addicts lose their family, homes, and other things because they simply are too addicted to a substance to care about anything else. It is at this time that most loved ones intervene to get a person help.
If a family member is looking to help their addicted loved one out or a person who is an addict is thinking about help, they are going to want to know what happens when they start this process. This article is going to go into detail on how the recovery process works for people who have an addiction and why it is helpful. Remember, if there is a problem with addiction that you can recover, recovery is always an option.
The First Steps
If someone that is in the family or a close friend has an addiction problem, they are going to need help. Before a person can get that help, they are going to need to get an assessment done with a counselor. This is generally going to be free as well as confidential. Plus, this is the time where any questions can be answered about a program. If a person is not willing to do this and family and friends are worried, and intervention can be arranged. You can call Harris House to find out more information with a counselor.
The next step in the beginning process is determining the age of the individual that needs help. There are certain places that tend to minors and those who tend to adults.
Rehabilitation Process
When you enter an addiction or recover processes you can expect there to be programs set in place to help. Some programs include the Twelve Step programs which are aiming for a lifetime of recovery. There are programs that use medication and some use therapies to help. Whichever one is chosen; it is chosen based on the needs of an individual.
Many people are diagnosed with addiction as well as mental illness. This means that their mental illness has played a major role in their substance abuse. Most treatment centers are going to take all of this into account to help treat you the best way that they can.
Different Treatments
When you check into a rehabilitation program there are many different options for treatment. There are inpatient and outpatient treatments and many others that are going to be discussed. Depending on your level of addiction and what will work best for you will be decided with you and your counselor. One of the top programs that are used to treat addiction is the inpatient program.
Intensive Inpatient Programs
This program is available for men and women. This program is going to provide special treatment plans for each individual person. Usually, the general inpatient treatment is going to include two group meetings in the mornings, individual meetings with your counselor, and three group sessions spanning over the afternoon and evening hours.
Most group sessions are going to be educational or process-oriented. An educational group is going to teach addicts what their addiction can do to the body and what it can do if their addiction continues further. If the group is a process group, you are going to discuss how you feel and how to deal with your feelings. These groups are going to give you positive ways to deal with your feelings.
Partial Hospitalization Programs
Partial Hospitalization is going to be about five days a week with each day being six hours. This means that you are going to spend most of the time at the hospital but you are still going to be able to leave. The days can be changed depending on your progress and your individual goals.
There are going to be group sessions that are going to focus on how to manage your addiction and stress as well as groups that are going to educate you on what is going on with your body when you abuse drugs. Partial hospitalization is going to have two different therapies that are known as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy or DBT.
Intensive Outpatient Programs
Keep in mind that people who are at different levels of recovery are going to need different levels of programs. When people are participating in the intensive outpatient program, they are going to find that it is a great option for those who are working and for those who simply do not want to do inpatient treatment.
This treatment is going to have group sessions that are going to educate as well as inform you about what this addiction has done and will do to your body. You can also talk to other people and see how they have been doing with their addiction and what has helped them. Generally, the program is going to be at least four weeks if not twelve. Keep in mind that it can be longer depending on what is needed for an individual.
Transitional Housing Level 1 Program
This is going to include housing, meals, and counseling for a whole year. Those who have participated in the intensive inpatient program are going to generally go here for their next step in recovery. If you have not done the inpatient program you can still apply.
This program is going to provide addiction treatment after hospitalization. There are classes that are able to be taken to help deal with issues or prevent relapses. This program will help you work on employment skills and prepare you for getting a job. Lastly, there are counseling sessions that are included.
Transitional Housing Level 2 Program
This program is for those who are going to soon be living on their own. Housing is provided and these houses are held for those who have passed the level 1 program. There are no meals provided but they will teach you how to prepare your own meals in the kitchen. Meetings will occur once a month with a counselor.
