It’s commonly thought that kids and adults have totally different interests. When your child comes to you asking you to play with them, it’s probably with toys you don’t really care about yourself. Similarly, if you’re watching a movie and your kids want to join, they’ll probably start complaining of boredom after five minutes!
But there are some hobbies out there you can easily share with the kids. If you want to set up a family activity time that everyone is going to enjoy, try out the pastimes below and see what you think.

Journaling or Scrapbooking
We all have memories we’d like to look back on. We all keep ticket stumps and receipts from the things we’ve done or the places we’ve been. As such, why not start up a joint journaling and/or scrapbooking activity with the kids?
Sit down once a week to put a new page in your books, and add things from the week that’s just been to it, alongside pressed flowers, stickers, bits of paper, drawings, and really anything you’d like to stick onto the page.
Not only is this a very creative activity that tends to take up the attention, but it can be a pretty calm one as well. As such, it might be best to save this hobby for Sunday evenings, when you’re all unwinding before the start of the week ahead.
Gaming
You might see that we’ve put gaming on this list and immediately go ‘eek!’, but hear us out. Gaming isn’t just about booting up a console and playing a video game for hours on end, which we’re sure the kids would love to do if you’d let them. Gaming is also about pulling out board games and trying ‘tabletop’ based games that anyone of any age can get to grips with.
You get to spend time together as a family, play a fun game that isn’t just another round of Monopoly, and you can create a gaming collection together. Both you and the kids can start collecting dice, and you can surprise them with a new liquid core dice set after they bring home a great grade.
Similarly, you can collect action figures from famous game series and put up a shelf to display them on. You can even just collect the games themselves, some of which end up super rare and could even be worth lots of money one day!
Being Outside
Everyone gets more sun, everyone gets some fresh air, and everyone has the chance to have fun in the natural world.
Whether it’s a spot of gardening or going for a walk, or trying some bug hunting in the back garden, being outside is a wonderful hobby to share with your children.
It’s not impossible to share hobbies with the kids. In fact, when you really look, there are more than enough activities to go round! As such, try some out as a family and start having some more fun together.
